We are an all-volunteer organization founded in 2006. With the impending landfill crisis our island is currently facing, we are striving to divert from the landfill by getting #CurbsideRecycling with a MRF (Materials Recovery Facility), supporting regional #Composting, #SustainableConstruction and deconstruction of buildings, while preventing toxic waste incineration on Kauaʻi. Our volunteers help to achieve #ZeroWasteEvents and have produced timely, informative public forums and a PSA (see vimeo.com/zerowastekauai).

Zero Waste Kauaʻi is looking for more sustainability and zero waste enthusiasts to join us as officers, executive committee members, grant writers, administrators and more to connect, collaborate and support for our efforts however you can!

We invite you to join us for an in-person meetup next Thursday, October 10th from 4:30pm to 5:30pm at Līhuʻe Neighborhood Center to learn more and join our mission as we strive for a more sustainable island home for us all.

Zoom presentation and conversation with Pacific Biodiesel and their “Food First” model for a circular economy on Kaua`i’s Westside.

Learn About Community Based Biodiesel to Grow Hawaii’s Circular Economy — part of the ongoing virtual Climate Action Forum series hosted by Kaua’i Climate Action Coalition.

Our Guest Presenter will be Bob King, founder of Pacific Biodiesel, the renewable energy company founded in 1995 on Maui. Originally created to alleviate the disposal of waste cooking oil at Maui’s landfill, it is the longest operating biodiesel company in the U.S. Pacific Biodiesel has expanded to Kauai and is employing regenerative agriculture to farm sunflowers and other cover crops to remediate neglected cane fields and support Hawaii’s food security, energy security, along with supply chain resiliency and Hawaii’s circular economy.

🌱♻️ NEXT WEDNESDAY: Join us for a special online forum event where we will discuss solutions to our solid waste / landfill crisis on Kauaʻi!

The Kekaha Landfill will be FULL by 2026, but if the vertical expansion is approved it will add another four years. Everyone on Kauaʻi, can extend the life of the landfill by putting less into it, especially when 75% of what goes into the landfill does not belong in there in the first place (food waste and other organics that can be composted, recyclables, some construction and demolition waste that can be reused, etc.) If we cut our trash by half we should be able to extend the landfill to when the new one will be ready (about 10 years).

Instead of relying on landfilling, we need to become a 5R Community — one that #Reduces, #ReUses, #Repairs, #Recycles and #Rots (Composts).

👉 Join us TOMORROW for our first in-person Mālama ‘Āina Hui Meet-Up — a time & space to come together and share!

We are inviting agencies and activists, organizations and businesses, as well as individuals, who are working on climate resilience, addressing the landfill crisis, practicing regenerative agriculture, protecting endangered species, providing services for self-sufficiency (including affordable housing, public transportation and socially responsible banking). Anyone involved in the many diverse ways people engage to protect the place they call home - locally and globally, and within the framework of social justice, reciprocity, and respect for the host culture.

It’s a time to learn about each other’s work,
find ways to work together, and support each other.

On Wednesday, March 27 - from 5pm to 7:30pm we will gather at Kaua’i Community College Campus in the Cafeteria in the center of campus. We are asking your group to have someone give a 2-3 minute presentation about your mission, objectives, actions you have taken and any ongoing programs. We suggest each group bring an information board or handouts to share contact information. A locally sourced meal will be available early in the evening. This is a free event and open to the public. Please share this invitation with your members, staff, other groups you feel are appropriate, friends and family. This event is a ‘kakou thing’ and your participation is strongly encouraged and greatly appreciated.

County Council Chair Mel Rapozo is holding a series of Town Hall meetings starting tomorrow to gather community concerns ahead of the Council’s budget planning. We encourage residents to speak out against the County’s potential plan to burn trash (which is harmful to the environment), and to express your support for for regional organics #Composting, #CurbsideRecycling and a #MaterialsRecoveryFacility ( #MRF ) if you are able to.

If Kaua’iʻs landfill will be full in 2030 with a new landfill still being built, what can Kauaʻi residents, visitors and businesses do now to avert the looming possibility of no landfill? 🤔♻️

The most effective action is to cut back on the trash we send to the landfill. Our next virtual Kauaʻi Climate Action Forum this Wednesday 12/13 at 6pm will help you find ways.

Currently the landfill gets about 260 tons a day. If you look into your waste bin you will find not all of it is trash. We fill the landfill with ¼ recyclables, ¼ organics like food and green waste, and ¼ construction and demolition material. Did you know that food and green waste buried in the landfill emit methane as they decompose?

The 12/13 event, the last in this round of our Kauaʻi Climate Action Forum series — will focus on Kauaʻi businesses that can help you find ways to keep that non-trash out of the landfill. Our special guests Andy Boyd, Solid Waste Recycling Coordinator; Jesse Brown-Clay of @compostkauai ; Elizabeth Morse of Sunny’s Recycles; and Megan Fox, Executive Director of @malama_kauai will provide ways to reuse, refill, and recycle to help you minimize what you send to the landfill and keep the current landfill from overflowing before the next one is open.

Did you know that over 30% of all human-caused greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions originate from the world’s agri-food systems? Too often our discussions of climate solutions fail to address the need to radically transform our food systems.

Sadly, our food system from seed to table is rife with inequities. But it doesn’t have to be that way. While transforming our vast food system can seem monumental, there are many tangible actions we can take at the local level.

Join us for a virtual Kauai Climate Action Forum hosted by Kauaʻi Climate Action Coalition and Hawaiʻi Alliance for Progressive Action (HAPA) @hawaiiaction and co-sponsored by @surfriderkauai , Zero Waste Kauaʻi, 350Hawaiʻi and Hawaiʻi Land Trust to explore climate solutions along our local food system.
